THE HOUSTON ACTIVE LIVING PLAN officially launched at the June Go Healthy Houston taskforce meeting on June 14, 2017 in Houston, Texas. The Plan is the culmination of a yearlong effort engaging with multi-sectoral partners to develop strategies to increase active living opportunities for all Houstonians. Nearly 40 stakeholders representing various sectors, from the Houston Planning and Development Department, Parks and Recreation, METRO, Cigna, local hospitals, community services and local non-profit organizations, and more, participated in the event.

Active living is about people working together to create places where physical activities such as walking, biking, and playing are integral parts of everyday life. The Houston Active Living Plan is rooted in a “Health in All Policies” approach – meaning it takes all sectors to impact public health and achieve sustainable results. Collaboration and support from private and public organizations, city and county departments, and across all sectors is key to making an impact in our city. A role exists for everyone in implementing active living changes towards a healthier and livable community.

The Active Living Plan builds upon strategies within PLAN HOUSTON that focus on nurturing safe and healthy neighborhoods and connecting people and places. It includes six overall themes and goals.

• Public Health
• Culture
• Transportation
• Built Environment
• Parks and Recreation
• Sports and Fitness

Attendees worked in small workgroups to get engaged and discussed the strategies for each goal, how they anticipated using the Plan, and how collaborations could occur and partnerships and networking could continue to putting the Plan in action.  A Call to Action was provided to each participant.

The meeting achieved the overall goal – that being getting a variety of sectors and stakeholders engaged with the Plan, networking and leaving with some specific action steps towards making Houston a more active-living, healthier city.
